Good grief. by nightflameblue (4.00 / 1) #4 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 09:23:30 AM EST
I so want to go to a show that big some day.  All those types of shows are over in Europe somewhere though.  If I get rich, I will make it to at least one metal festival of some sort.

Ever seen Metal: A Headbanger's Journey?  It's not completely legit all the way through, but it has its moments.  One of them being the German metal fest.  Basically three days of drinking beer, eating like shit, and watching metal bands play.  And the movie maker, being a "press" person gets interviews with several of the more serious bands, which is always entertaining.

They are pretty awesome by Breaker (4.00 / 1) #5 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 09:38:23 AM EST
3 days of constant metal, meat and lager.

Start saving for 2009 and come on over!

I'll have to see if I can find that Metal: film I think...

It's a pretty good film. by nightflameblue (4.00 / 1) #6 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 09:49:14 AM EST
The guy who made it is a hard-core metal boy through and through that went to school for anthropology, so he approaches the entire genre of metal with anthropology on the brain.  It's really amazing to watch him break it down into the origins and then following the path from those origins to modern bands and how each step progressed in a certain direction.

Plus he has absolutely KILLER extras of Lemmy and Dio and Alice Cooper chatting it up about the good old days.

The only thing about that film by MartiniPhilosopher (4.00 / 1) #7 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 10:05:52 AM EST
I found unnecessary and completely hilarious was the interview with the deathmetal guys in Norway.

Just the way that one guy says "Satan" makes me giggle like Dana Carvey.

I wouldn't say unnecessary. by nightflameblue (4.00 / 1) #9 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 10:19:17 AM EST
I found it added a nice little twist of the knife to the whole "taking yourself too seriously" crowd.

I want the poster by MartiniPhilosopher (2.00 / 0) #11 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 10:36:54 AM EST
That has the "genealogy" of metal on it. That is almost worth the price of the dvd alone.

There's a poster? by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #13 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 10:45:42 AM EST
I've hunted and searched everywhere for it, or heck, even a high-grade downloadable image of it I could look at.  I can't seem to find it anywhere.

That genealogy chart is incredibly detailed and awesome looking.

You have to own the DVDs by MartiniPhilosopher (4.00 / 1) #18 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 11:43:55 AM EST
It's an extra on the second disk of the double set. Poster was the wrong word to use there. I remembered that part wrong.

WTF? by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #19 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 12:02:31 PM EST
I own the DVDs.  That shit is NOT on there.  Unless there was a second, later release of them that included it.  In which case, I'm going to have to go searching for THAT release.

Was that Decline II? by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #10 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 10:24:50 AM EST
If so, this movie was sort of made as a counter-point to that movie.  It was like Decline was all about how evil and horrible and terrible metal is, while Metal is a little more even-handed, though sometimes a tiny bit heavy-handed with the defensiveness.  I could see getting annoyed with it, if I wasn't one of the folks who has had to defend myself for liking metal for most of my life.

Let's just say if you've ever had somebody say to you, "it's just a song" after spending a good hour telling you what a piece of shit you are for listening to it, you'll get the movie.

Yeah that was the one by Breaker (2.00 / 0) #12 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 10:45:16 AM EST
And then came grunge and the TrueMetal was put out to pasture for 10 years or so.

In Chermany this week but will try to see if I can get it when back in Londinium over the weekend.

Grunge. by nightflameblue (2.00 / 0) #14 Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 11:02:43 AM EST
The next time I hear someone tell me how much better it was when grunge showed up and wiped out the showboats they're getting a kick right in the googlies.

But I'd still wear leather pants on stage if given the opportunity.

Shiny leather pants.

Oh yeah, I went there.
